There is a good chance you are reading this blog while sitting at your desk.

There is a good chance if you are a desk worker, you have had some form of back or neck pain.

 

Generally, this pain may be accompanied by noticeable decreases in movements and rotations of the neck and upper back. Does this sound undesirable?

Have you considered a standing desk?

 

Chairs have significantly evolved to improve our level of comfort, to allow us to sit for prolonged periods. However, our bodies haven’t been designed to sit for prolonged periods, and as such hasn’t evolved in this way.

The statistics and research are escalating on the detrimental impact of constant prolonged sitting on our health and body. For instance:

  • Neck pain. From the Public Library of Science, they concluded:

    • A positive correlation between prolonged sitting time (hours in total) and lower back pain intensity. 

      • Conclusion: When the body is leaning forward in a sitting position, gravity wants to pull your face down and put excessive pressure on structures in your neck. Let’s begin to consider an option to assist this process …

  • Calories burned. From the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, they concluded:           

    • While sitting, subjects burned 80 calories/hour

    • While standing, subjects burned 88 calories/hour

      • Conclusion: if we were to stand for 3 hours per day more then our regular 7.5 hours of sitting, we could burn 24 more calories to improve health and impact on our joints. Let’s begin to consider an option to assist this process …

  • Health risks. Research has suggested a link between sitting for prolonged periods and increases in:

    • Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature death.

So not everyone can throw in the white towel to become a yoga instructor or personal trainer. It’s just not in everyone’s cards.

How about you begin to consider a standing desk?

It is not uncommon for companies to supply standing desks in the office for employees to utilise. It is a great effective tool for reducing poor sitting postures and maintaining work productivity in the office. However, just because you are standing in your work station, this does not mean pain will immediately reduce nor will maintaining good posture become less important.
