Running is one of those activities performed regularly. It is commonly involved in sport and fitness but can also be used in everyday life activities. A misconception exists where some people believe that running can only do harm and can cause some form of musculoskeletal issues, injuries or pains.

A Melbourne based research paper found running can result in a good outcome for your back.

With regards to the study at hand, by the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition in Victoria. Researchers in early 2017 introduced a world first scientific investigation on prolonged running and its influence on the disc within the lower back region.

The research paper had investigated and compared two groups:

  1. Long distance runners

  2. Distance joggers

 

The study compared their disc integrity and contents. The paper concluded, those individuals who run further have healthier discs. For those brainiac’s out there, the study showed that those long-distance runners had discs with:

  • Greater glucosaminology in the disc

  • Greater disc hydration in the disc

  • Hypertrophy of the disc

What does this mean and what are the important points in this paper?

  • The longer you run, the better the disc strength and lifespan

  • The long distance running group had healthier discs then the group of joggers

  • The effect and improvement were greatest for the most problematic joints in the lower spine

  • Physiotherapists can provide very specific program consisting of structured running as part of a home program and exercise.
