Fragile bones, brittle bones, bones that are weak and feel unstable… have you ever wondered what this means?
… Osteoporosis is a common disease impacting our society.
In Australia, it is estimated 1.2 million people suffer from osteoporosis. It is a condition that makes bones brittle and more susceptible to breaks/ fractures.
Exercise and Sport Science Australia had come out with a position statement in 2017 regarding exercise prescription for prevention and management of osteoporosis. They ultimately concluded there are some guidelines on safe and effective exercise for bone health. Assuming the program considers previous injuries and current conditions, physical activity can assist to:
-
Improve bone mineral density
-
Increase size, strength and capacity of our muscles
If physical activity or exercise is engaged early in life, this can reduce bone loss in older ages. For the elderly, the focus is more to maintain and improve muscle mass, strength and to address risk factors of falls.
So, what is the right kind of exercise?
-
Weight bearing exercise (i.e. stair climbing, squats, tennis, aerobic classes, walking)
-
Progressive resistance training (i.e. lifting weights and utilising gym equipment)
These exercises are to be performed regularly, progressively, and varied.
