Do you have leg pain while sitting or while you are lying down in bed?

Is it a burning pain that can make you feel weak?

Are you experiencing pins and needles going down the front or back of the leg?

Do you have some lower back pain as well?

Today we are briefly discussing nerve pain and nerve glides. At Limp in Leap out Physiotherapy in Belfield, we specialise in nerve pain that radiates in the arm and legs.

Nerve pain can mostly originate from the spine. Generally, nerve pain in the peripherals (arms or legs) can originate from:

  • A disc pushing on the nerve

  • Swelling on the ligamentum flavum that pushes on the nerve

  • Bone spurs pushing on the nerve

What can nerve pain feel like?

  • Burning pain

  • Leg tingling and numbness

  • Weakness or heaviness

  • Constant pain

Physiotherapy can help!

Nerve glides are a technique a physiotherapist can use to reduce nerve pain. In a recent 2017 article regarding the physiology of nerve glides, they found that when applying a glide, we can reduce the sensitivity of the nerve. This works via reducing the excitability of the dorsal horn cells. These dorsal horn cells are involved in the process of information and signals sent to our brain. Hence, the nerve glides can work to reduce how we feel pain in the nerve.

Nerve glides can also assist to remove swelling (edema) in the region that can be contributing to the nerve pain. WOW. So basically, we can reduce nerve pain with our very cool nerve glide technique. This works effectively for all nerves of the arm and leg.
