Hamstring Injury

Limp in Leap out Physiotherapy & Wellness in Belfield provides servicing to many near by Inner West suburbs including Belmore, Strathfield and Croydon park. See below some general information regarding a condition we can treat.

A hamstring injury can occur when excessive load is placed on the hamstring muscles. At Limp in Leap out Physiotherapy clinic in Belfield, we have a tremendous amount of experience assisting this type of injury - due to our years of football sports coverage experience.

The hamstring muscles activate and are pivotal to specific stages of walking, running or kicking. Severity is graded as:

  • Grade 1 – up to 50% of muscle fibres are damaged

  • Grade 2 – 50-95% of muscle fibres are damaged

  • Grade 3 – total muscle rupture

During an acute hamstring injury, bleeding can occur initially at the site of the injury, followed by an inflammatory process that assists in the healing phase. Ensure you don’t stretch within first 48 hours as this can aggravate the injury. Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Pain isolated in the site of injury

  • Swelling in and around the injury

  • Bruising present, with severe cases

  • How the injury/ pain occurred; for example, running fast, kicking a ball, over stretching

Treatment for this condition includes soft tissue therapy for swelling reduction and scar tissue reduction, low intensity ultrasound therapy for tissue recovery, implementing a strengthening program and guiding the patient when to return into exercise/ sport.
