Christmas Holiday Tips to Stay Injury Free

Are you busy with the week leading up to Christmas? The unfortunate fact is many people develop some form of musculoskeletal injury over the holiday season. Especially with the majority of health funds restarting calendar year, make time for yourself & visit us to be pain free this holiday season.

Here are some tips to get you through the Christmas holidays:

  1. Christmas holidays commonly entail travelling up or down the country to spend time with relatives and family. Get that niggling back and neck pain checked out before you leave. Long drives may irritate a spinal injury. Physiotherapy can help restore joint and muscle problems, as well as an exercise program to help you over the holidays.

  2. The body is designed to move. Sitting for an extended period in the car can therefore irritate the previously injured body part. Divide your journey into short segments of two hours or less. As well as avoiding fatigue, this will allow the body to move and therefore reduce aggravations.

  3. Avoid heavy lifting over the holidays. If heavy lifting is inevitable – have a friend or family member help to reduce the load on your body and prevent an aggravation.

  4. Hours upon hours of cutting, chopping and peeling veggies are ahead. Tasks like this can stress and strain the body. Tips to avoid problems include changing positions from sitting and standing, standing with one foot forward or on a stool, and have a family member assist with the load.

  5. When taking the 10-kg turkey out of the oven, be sure to bend your knees or kneel down. Your discs and joints don’t like when you bend at your back, so instead, bend at your knees.
