What is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis is a broad term that describes degeneration of the spine. It may refer to osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis or disc degeneration. Spondylosis may have various symptoms such as tingling, numbness down the legs or arm, weakness and difficulty walking.

How do we treat it?

Exercise is one of the best ways to treat spondylosis. The two main types of exercises are stabilization exercise and flexion exercises.

A randomised controlled trial study that was done in 2021 compared stabilisation exercises vs flexion exercises which are commonly prescribed by physiotherapists. The study had 92 patients separated into two groups. The intervention group perform stabilisation exercises including heat pack for 15min, stretching, glute bridge holds and straight leg raise. In contrast, the controlled group treatment involves Wiliams flexion program which includes dynamic lumbar flexion exercises in both sitting and lying.

What is the result?

The result shows that both programs have reduced pain and function significantly. However there are no significant differences between the two groups. That means one treatment is not inferior to another. They both have evidence in the past suggesting they are outstanding exercise programs. Therefore although it does not suggest stabilisation exercises are better, it is still conveying the message of exercises improves pain and function if prescribed correctly by professionals.
